Working on the Inside at MLS All-Star Weekend

Opportunity knocked for the Soccer in the Streets Lifeworks youth program in July. With the MLS All-Star Game being staged in Atlanta, there was a need for volunteers to operate the many planned events throughout the city. It was an opportunity that the program – and teens – couldn’t pass up.

Working with MLS employees and Striking Marketing, the Soccer in the Streets teens were given the opportunity to officiate the celebrity soccer games, work the event booths getting waivers signed or giving out All-Star swag, as well as working the large crowds and part of the mobile marketing team.

Two brand new FieldTurf pitches. And, LED lights, lighting so that games and players can go long into the night.

Soccer in the Streets is the engine behind the second field installation adjacent to a MARTA station -- the first field opened at the Five Points station in October 2016. The concept is to enable urban youngsters (ages 6 to 18) to play on the 99-by-66 foot artificial turf fields free of charge, with fees from players in adult leagues partly financing the project.

Last Fall, Clarkston FC finished undefeated to claim the State Division II Championship, earning their first berth at the highest level in their division. As a once in a lifetime experience, these players were granted an opportunity to represent Clarkston, a community in Atlanta, GA. Unlike other high-priced soccer clubs, these players had to earn their way to the Regionals Tournament.

ATLANTA (June 4, 2018) – The Eighth Annual Soccer in the Streets Champions League event was held on Sunday, June 3 at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground and the home side – Atlanta United – gained revenge by defeating the Manchester United side in a rematch of last year’s championship match-up.  However, the main goal of the event was raising funds to bring soccer to lower income communities while leveling the playing field for children regardless of socioeconomic status.

Sons of Pitches FC and Soccer in the Streets are teaming up for the Champion The Youth Tournament, a seven- a side tournament. The main objective of the event is to raise funds to purchase tickets to an Atlanta United soccer game and provide cluster camps for the High School soccer teams from Washington High School, Carver High School, and Maynard Jackson High School soccer teams.

The Soccer Journey of Kwaku

From Station Soccer youth training on the weekends, 12-year-old Kwaku found his passion through Soccer in the Streets’ community-based programs. He now plays for the College Park Westside program under Coaches Abu Tommy, Adnan, and Kiambi Yamani. Additionally, Kwaku continues to practice one on one with Coach Joel on the weekends at Station Soccer. He has been with Soccer in the Streets for two years while attending Georgia Cyber Academy in South Atlanta.

Station Soccer In Full Swing

Station Soccer is off to a great start in 2018, further validating the successes of 2017. This time last year, the first free trial adult soccer leagues were ending, and it was unclear if players would return for another paid season. Since then, over $50,000 has been raised for children in Atlanta through Station Soccer adult programming, including public and corporate leagues, adult pick-up, and private events and tournaments.

Vine City Thunder: A New Force on the Westside

Vine City, located two miles to the west of Downtown Atlanta, is one of the many communities of metro Atlanta where Soccer in the Streets has planted its seeds. Vine City Thunder, the resulting product of Soccer in the Streets’ programming, is a multi-cultural team in the heart of the Westside, providing an outlet for kids around the area to fall in love with the beautiful game while shaping their personalities off the field. The sessions are a part of the Soccer in the Streets community-based programs.  The seeds are germinating.

Soccer In The Streets Kicks Off Spring Season

With both School and Community programming, Soccer in the Streets is set to kick off its spring season the first week of March. This spring, Soccer in the Streets will be running after school soccer sessions at Atlanta Public Schools (APS), Dekalb County Schools and Marietta City Schools - ranging from grades third through sixth - as well as community programming at nine different locations in metro Atlanta.
