Atlanta native Tony Carter grew up playing nearly every sport made available to him. He played on the school basketball, baseball, and soccer teams, and joined friends in his neighborhood for games of pick-up basketball. Basketball – not soccer – was THE sport to play for kids in the area where he was raised, but Tony could not shake the love he was developing for the game of soccer.
Back in 2017, England native Jessica Charman was excited to be recruited to play in a fundraising soccer tournament. She signed up, encouraged her friends to donate, and eventually put on her gloves to play in goal for Team Great Britain in Soccer in the Streets’ Nations Cup. Little did she know her teammate, Phil Hill, was her future director.
Just over a year ago, while sitting at home in Richmond, VA, Garrick Dawson was browsing the web when an article caught his attention. The article was titled, “World’s First Transit Station Soccer Field”. He then shared the story on Facebook, not knowing anything about the non-profit organization, Soccer in the Streets. That was until six months ago when he called the Director of Programs, Lauren Glancy, to get a better understanding of what Soccer in the Streets was all about. A week later, he was packing a U-haul in Richmond to move to Atlanta and start his new position with Soccer in the Streets as the School Program Manager. Coincidence? Maybe. Some would call it fate.
Jorge Ortiz previously coached for Soccer in the Streets in the Underwood Hills community during his time in graduate school at Georgia State University where he studied sports administration. Upon finishing school, he joined Soccer in the Streets as a new Community Program Manager. Making soccer available to everyone is what drew him to Soccer in the Streets.
